The women of FC Bayern Munich began the group stage of the Champions League with a draw. Against AS Roma, Alexander Straus’ team missed out on victory in the finals.
The FC Bayern women missed out on a perfect start to the season in the Champions League. “We had the opportunity to make it 3-0,” was the sobering conclusion of goalscorer Jovana Damnjanovic. “Unfortunately we didn’t take advantage of the opportunity.” His teammate Sydney Lohmann was also disappointed after the 2-2 draw on the first day against AS Roma. “It feels a little bit like a defeat,” the 23-year-old said. “Now we only have one point.”
The offensive start brings an advantage
The hosts entered the first group match of the 2023/24 Champions League on Wednesday (November 15) with plenty of offensive power. Sarah Zadrazil (4th) tried from the second line, but the ball, like Linda Dallmann’s (10th) shot from six meters, was no problem for Roma goalkeeper Camelia Caesar.
Despite the 2-0 lead, it was not a sure success
The Munich players were visually superior in the early stages, but the Romans held up well. Jovana Damnjanovic dealt the Italian visitors the first setback with a controversial goal in the 20th minute. The 28-year-old FCB forward pushed the ball over the line from close range and took a 1-0 lead. The Italians complained that since there was no VAR the goal counted. Roma at least did not let themselves be impressed and looked for a playful solution to the goal.
Despite the advantage, the match was not a sure success for the Munich team. Georgia Stanway also had to leave the field for a short time due to arm problems. And in the 26th minute, Laura Feiersinger had the opportunity to equalize, but her ball went over María Luisa Grohs’ area. Katharina Naschenweng’s deflected shot made it 2-0 shortly before half-time.
Roma returns after the counterattack
The Romans came out of the locker room with a lot of pressure. But at the beginning FC Bayern was in charge. Goal-scorer Lea Schüller dangerously made her way into the penalty area and put the ball into the goal, while a defender (51′) calmed the situation just before the goal line. The next good shot came from Damjanovic (53′), whose shot was parried by Caesar.
After losing the ball in the center of the field, things happened very quickly. Manuela Giugliano moved quickly and sent Evelyn Viens abruptly to the left. The Canadian shot low with her left foot in the area and the ball ended up in the far corner, unsustainable for Grohs. The Romans returned to the game with the aim of making it 2-1 and pressed to tie. Guigliano then managed to score a double in the 90th minute. Despite having more chances, the Munich team wasted the perfect start to the group stage.
