Is a well-known baking giant taking money out of its customers’ pockets with the cup trick? At least that’s what a customer claims in a video. The bakery responds.

Munich – For many people, going to the bakery first thing in the morning has long been part of their daily routine. After all, drinking as much coffee as possible should quickly give your body the energy it needs before work. But rumors continue to circulate on the internet warning about the cup trick.

It is also said that a large Bavarian bakery cheats on the size of its cups and therefore takes money out of its customers’ pockets every day. At least that’s what a Facebook user from Munich says, who now registers his discontent in a video message.

Via video: Man complains about the size of the coffee

In the Munich video, two cups appear in the foreground: one small and one large. The “Ihle” brand is unmistakably engraved on the paper cups in large white letters on a red background. For more than 125 years, the Swabian rural bakery has offered its customers not only sweet and savory snacks, but also drinks, according to the company’s own website.

But at first glance it is clear: the large cup filled with latte macchiato is only three-quarters full. Therefore, the creator of the video message feels uncomfortable just watching it. “That’s what they call big,” he says sarcastically as he slowly pours the contents of the large glass into the smaller one.

“The big one fits 100 percent into the small one,” the user is heard prophesying during the campaign. And indeed: the cup is full. Does that mean: the same content at different prices?

“This is a complete scam,” comments the video creator in his post. The apparently deceived person receives a lot of support from the Facebook community. “This is beyond nonsense,” he says to himself several times in the comments.

The large bakery responds to the accusations

However, the accusation does not go unnoticed by the bakery giant Ihle. Asked by the editorial staff, the chain gave a long explanation to justify its choice of cup sizes. Therefore, in the branches there are two cup sizes for coffee, latte and cappuccino, but not for latte macchiato.

“We only offer latte macchiato in one size. Both in the cafeteria and to take away. Here the glass of about 330 ml is our measurement. This is between the regular 250 ml glass and the large 400 ml glass. There is only one prize in the contest,” explains a spokesperson for the rural bakery. The price of the standard macchiato is around 3.40 euros.

Medium: Since, as in this case, the latte macchiato is served in a 0.4 liter glass, the paper cup should not be filled to the top. This means that the contents also fit into the next smaller packaging size. “This has been a compromise we have had to make for many years to not have to list too many packaging items.”

After customer complaint about coffee size: bakery checks

However, Ihle does not want to completely rule out a mishap. Also possible in principle are “a breakdown, the milk container running out, or a distracted employee.” The network now wants to examine the complaint.

“Clear communication and consistent products are always very important to us. “Also an apology if a mistake has been made,” he writes to us to conclude the bakery. A small consolation for the amazed visitor to the bakery.
