Since Jonathan Majors’ arrest, the question has arisen as to what will happen to Kang in the MCU. An important decision has now been made in this regard.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
After Thanos (Josh Brolin) was the famous comic book villain kang actually like new main villain was chosen for the current saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, this plan is in jeopardy after Kang actor Jonathan Majors was arrested on March 25, 2023 and subsequently charged with assault and harassment of a woman. More reports subsequently came to light accusing Majors of, among other things, misconduct on film sets.
Since then, the question has been whether Disney and Marvel Studios will be able to retain Jonathan Majors. The case against the actor is scheduled to open on November 29, 2023 (via CBS). It is possible that those responsible have already made a decision and it will surprise many fans.
Vanity Fair journalist Joanna Robinson, who is well connected in Marvel circles and recently made a name for herself as co-author of the book “MCU: The Reign of the Marvel Studios” (available here on Amazon), has now appeared in the podcast “House of R” (via ComicBook.com) dropped the corresponding bomb: according to its information, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” will be the author Jeff Loveness will no longer write the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. According to Robinson, this decision was probably made because Say goodbye to Kang as a villain wool.
Of course, at the moment it is not official that Jeff Loveness has been expelled, nor that Kang must say goodbye to him at the same time. It wouldn’t be surprising if someone else was entrusted with the script for the fifth Avengers movie after the generally negative reaction to “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” However, the start of Phase 5 of the MCU associated with the job also established Kang as the new main villain, so it was initially obvious that Loveness should be responsible for his first big showdown with the Avengers. If the author really was relieved of his duties, that could, of course, be an indicator, as Joanna Robinson suggested, that the MCU also wants to reposition itself with Kang.
What is certain, however, is that the next Avengers movie will have to reposition itself in terms of the director’s position:
A replacement for Kang could already be ready, and he fits perfectly in “Avengers 6”
It wasn’t until early November that Variety reported that a Kang exit would cause problems, as he had already established himself as the MCU’s new big villain. But if we look closer, that doesn’t have to be the case. Aside from “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the two seasons of “Loki,” Majors did not appear as a variant of Kang in any other titles. The “Loki” Season 2 finale also didn’t explicitly position Kang as a major looming threat. In its new role, TVA is keeping an eye on the Kang variants, which in the MCU’s future could easily be interpreted as having the threat under control. In this scenario, Kang would not become a significant threat to the Avengers.
We explain the ending of “Loki” in the video or in the linked article.
In reality, Kang offers the perfect opportunity to easily recast a character with a different actor or actress. “Loki” finally established that variants in the multiverse don’t always look the same, aren’t always limited to a single gender, and aren’t even always human. However, those responsible may believe that Kang is too closely linked to the face of Jonathan Major and that they would prefer to leave this chapter completely behind due to the criminal process. Kang would then follow Ultron’s lead and essentially limit himself to a single appearance as a major, recurring Marvel villain; Although this time he wouldn’t even be enough to fight the Avengers.
Of course, “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” would need a new title and a new antagonist, and this is where the aforementioned Variety report comes into play again. According to him, Doctor Doom is already being discussed internally as a possible replacement, which would certainly be suitable. After all, Doctor Doom is one of the most popular Marvel villains of all time, and with “Fantastic Four” a movie is in the works that could establish him in the MCU. Plus, one year after “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” the next big thing hits theaters with “Avengers: Secret Wars.” And who was responsible for the final version of Secret Wars in the comics? Exactly, Doctor Doom.
But as mentioned above: none of this is official, it’s just speculation at this point. Marvel fans will be curious to see if the MCU’s current plan will change again. First, things continue on the series front in the multiverse thanks to season 2 of “What If?”, which begins exclusively on Disney+ in the holiday season of 2023; You can secure your subscription here. It’s not impossible for Kang to (still) play a role there. Next year’s next and only MCU movie will also delve into the multiverse: “Deadpool 3” opens in American theaters on July 26, 2024, probably two days earlier in this country. After that, fans can expect a break due to the Hollywood strikes now over; Perhaps this will give those responsible the time they need to finally resolve Kang’s dilemma.
